The LIA is a non-profit organization based in Brussels whose stated political objective is the abolition of speciesism. How? By exerting political and legal pressure on the State in order to grant non-human animals a non-human legal personality adapted to their specific characteristics.

In practical terms, this involves promoting veganism and anti-speciesism among the general public and policymakers. The LIA advocates for recognizing animals as non-human legal persons endowed with fundamental rights. It calls for “an adapted legal personality and essential rights for all sentient animals,” so that no animal is ever again regarded as movable property.

“Together, let’s abolish speciesism!” — this is its guiding call. In other words, the LIA aims to eliminate discrimination against animals, just as we oppose discrimination among humans.

To fulfill its mission, the LIA carries out awareness-raising and advocacy actions at multiple levels. It organizes or supports information campaigns (leaflet distribution, information stands at events, online publications) to encourage individuals to question animal exploitation. It also offers conferences, debates and training sessions — for example through its blog La Parole Antispéciste or public gatherings — in order to promote anti-speciesist ideas.

Furthermore, the LIA takes part in large-scale civic demonstrations to ensure that animals’ voices are heard where they are too often absent. For instance, its members were present at the 2025 Climate March in Brussels to highlight the link between intensive farming and the climate crisis. By placing animal advocacy within the broader environmental movement, the organization reaches a wide and diverse audience. It adopts the same approach in relation to other social causes.

Finally, on the political level, the LIA does not hesitate to undertake legal action and engage with public authorities to advance legislation in favor of animals (for example, advocating for the prohibition of cruel practices, participating in public consultations, etc.).

Although still young, the LIA has already made a notable impact within the Belgian and international activist landscape. By raising awareness of veganism among the general public and challenging policymakers on the condition of animals, the LIA contributes to shifting mindsets.
